Nurturing Tomorrow’s Eco-Innovators: The UCP “Flower of the Future” Circular Product Design Challenge

At UCP, we believe true corporate social responsibility goes beyond traditional donations. It is about actively sharing our expertise to create meaningful, hands-on learning experiences for the next generation.

On August 25, 2026, we proudly hosted the final judging session of the UCP “Flower of the Future” Circular Product Design Challenge, organized in collaboration with Principal Chan Free Tutorial World. Over an intensive four-week journey, 17 energetic transition students (spanning Primary 6 graduates to Form 3) dived into the world of circular design, tackled local environmental issues, and built incredible physical models using recycled materials.

🗺️ The Four-Stage Journey to Circularity

We structured the challenge into four distinct phases to guide the students from conceptual spark to physical prototype:

Stage 1: Spark & Learn

Students were introduced to circular design principles and local environmental challenges, empowering them to identify issues they felt passionate about solving.

Stage 2: Design & Improve

Concepts began to take shape. Students received direct feedback and engineering advice from our outstanding volunteer mentors: Junli and Bruce (R&D), Jen (Product Development), and Eddie (Sample Component Preparation).

Stage 3: Unbox & Build

The highlight of the program! Armed with recycled materials, students spent four hours crafting physical prototypes. Our volunteers worked side-by-side with them, asking guiding questions to stimulate their creativity.

Stage 4: Polish & Pitch

The grand finale. Students refined their models and pitched directly to our judging panel. The level of preparation—complete with scripts and technical diagrams—and their presentation confidence far exceeded our expectations.

🏆 Celebrating the Winning Projects

The creativity on display was truly inspiring. We are thrilled to announce the top three winning teams:

🥇 Champion: Lam Yu Fei & Yeung Hoi Ning (林雨霏 & 楊海寧)

Project: #1 Hexagonal Seawall Oil Filter

Innovation: An ingenious biomimicry seawall device that utilizes specialized microorganisms to break down marine oil pollution while simultaneously providing natural habitats for coastal wildlife and resisting wave erosion.

🥈 First Runner-up: Yeung Chi Wa & Chan Suk Yan (楊智鏵 & 陳淑恩)

Project: #3 Bee Ring

Innovation: A highly creative, bee-shaped portable mini air-purifying device designed to protect urban citizens on the go.

🥉 Second Runner-up: Leung Kin Hung & Ku Man Chun (梁健洪 & 顧汶晉)

Project: #7 Ocean Guardian

Innovation: An automated marine-debris cleaning machine equipped with microplastic water filtration. The design thoughtfully incorporates a mechanism to drop marine vegetation to help restore damaged underwater habitats.

📈 Program Impact & Looking Forward

The feedback from our young innovators speaks for itself:

  • Over 85% of participants rated the challenge as highly fun and engaging.
  • More than 75% stated they would enthusiastically recommend this program to their peers.

As our first hands-on circularity workshop tailored for junior secondary students, this initiative was an invaluable learning experience for our team as well. Seeing the deep engagement of these grassroots students has reinforced our drive to scale this model.

We look forward to partnering with more schools and charitable organizations in the future, while continuing our close, impactful relationship with Principal Chan Free Tutorial World. Nurturing the next generation through sustainable design is a journey we are incredibly proud to lead.
